BRAUN ANDRÁS | András Braun #festőZOMBIK

In the paintings of András Braun (1967–2015), geometry, optical rhythm, pop culture and found imagery come together. His recurring forms are both disciplined and psychedelic; in his collages, fragments of everyday imagery become the raw material for a new visual order.

He studied under Károly Klimó and Zsigmond Károlyi. Károlyi taught him at Budapest’s Secondary School of Visual Arts and later during his postgraduate studies at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. He was represented by acb Gallery from 2003; his exhibitions in Budapest also included presentations at Deák Erika, Neon and NextArt galleries.

Alongside his painting practice, he earned his living through film and theatre work. He worked at the Béla Balázs Studio, painted film sets and contributed to the making of Kiki és a hímek. In productions by György Árvai and Yvette Bozsik, he worked with sets, lighting and sound.

A documentary portrait of the artist is listed on the Cameofilm website as Braun András festőművész (András Braun, Painter). This 26-minute documentary from 2016 is an important resource for exploring his work.

Circles of Life (1992), exhibited at MoZsÅr, is a collage assembled from discarded prints of MAGNUM billboards. Zsigmond Károlyi’s studio at Epreskert provided enough space for Braun to assemble this monumental work. Here, the visual promise of advertising becomes the material of an independent painterly world.
